Regarding disability tax credit eligibility and determining if you are disabled for tax purposes, the definition of disabled depends on the credit or exception. However, you’re usually considered disabled for tax purposes if either of these applies:

  • You’re unable to engage in any gainful activity due to physical or mental impairment.
  • Your impairment is expected to result in death or last for a long or indefinite period.

Provide proof of the disability with a physician’s statement on one of these:

  • Form 1040, Schedule R
  • Form 1040A, Schedule 3

These don’t have to be filed, but you should keep them for your records related to disability tax credit eligibility.
