Question

If I report different dependents than I claimed in the prior tax year, or have added additional dependents to those that I claimed last year, should I expect to be audited?

Answer

The IRS doesn’t disclose the standards and criteria used for its dependent eligibility audit selection.

You can claim any person as a dependent if he or she meets the requirements for a qualifying child or a qualifying relative.

There’s no maximum number of dependents you can claim.
