Why did I get an e-file error stating that I have a possible incorrect dependent SSN for my dependent?
There could be many reasons you got that e-file error regarding your dependent’s social security number. However, we’ll help you fix it.
First, to begin to rectify the e-file rejection, verify these for your dependent:
- Name
- Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)
- Date of birth
Check these against the Social Security card issued by the Social Security Administration. Also, look for spelling and transposition errors.
Your dependent might have a hyphenated last name or multiple last names. If so, enter the first four letters of the initial last name and then the following last name.
If this doesn’t fix the issue, you should file a paper return and contact these organizations to correct your records:
- IRS Accounts Management at 800-829-0922
- Your local Social Security office
