Thanks to the recent North Carolina Coronavirus Relief Act 3.0, families across North Carolina now have access to grant money to help with child-care and virtual-learning expenses. The program, called the Extra Credit Grant, awards qualifying families a one-time $335 payment.

How do you know if your family will qualify? The North Carolina Department of Revenue will use information from your 2019 tax return to determine if you’re eligible for the funds.

To qualify, you must have:

  • Filed a 2019 North Carolina individual income tax return (Form D-400)
  • Been a resident of North Carolina for the entire 2019 calendar year. Exceptions apply for spouses.
  • Reported at least one qualifying child (16 or younger) on line 10a of Form D-400.

For eligibility details, including If you were not required to file a North Carolina return, review the NC Department of Revenue’s  Extra Credit Grant FAQ.

Grants are offered per eligible individual, not per child. That means families with two or more children will only receive $335.  Also, married couples who file a joint return will only receive $335.
