Those without access to a computer can check the status of their NJ state refund using an automated phone inquiry system. The system will share if and when the state will issue your refund, but can’t offer information on amended tax returns. The number is 1-800-323-4400 (toll-free within New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland) or 1-609-826-4400.
Both lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are generally two pieces of information that you will need to check on your NJ state tax refund:

- The amount of your refund

Electronic tax returns take at least four weeks to process in New Jersey. Paper tax returns take significantly longer at a minimum of 12 weeks.
