IRS Amended Return Status
Did you file an amended tax return (Form 1040x) but aren’t sure how to track the status? There are a few different options for amended tax return tracking:
- Go to http://www.irs.gov and click Where’s My Amended Return.
- Call 866-464-2050.
When tracking your amended return, you’ll need to give this information:
- Your taxpayer identification number (for most people, this is your Social Security number)
- Your date of birth
- Your ZIP code
Why Is the Amended Return I’m Tracking Taking so Long?
The IRS accepts most amended returns. However, since you have to mail amended returns to the IRS, they take longer to process. If you’re going to receive a refund from your amended return, the refund can take up to three months to arrive. You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS website.
Sometimes, the IRS disagrees with changes to amended returns. In this case, the IRS will usually send a denial letter or a more formal letter called a notice of claim disallowance. If that happens, you have two options to fix the issue: appeal the IRS decision or take the case to court.
Amended return denial notices are usually vague, so it’s not always clear why the IRS denied the amended return. Get help from a trusted IRS expert. You or your tax pro should start by getting a complete understanding of why the IRS denied the claim. Then, you’ll be able to choose the best course to take.
