Why you received IRS Letter 1020

  1. You were notified that you are being audited.
  2. The IRS sent Letter 1020 to you for one of the following reasons:
    • The documentation you provided is being returned
    • The documentation is being requested for the second time and must be submitted within 10 days of the notice date
    • Your audit will be moved to another office
    • You have a new scheduled appointment for the audit
    • You were given additional time to provide the requested substantiation
    • Your case was sent to the IRS Office of Appeals, but has now been transferred back to the auditor

Notice deadline: 10 days

If you miss this deadline: If this letter requests that you provide documentation, failure to provide that information will likely result in the IRS disallowing the credit or deduction for which they were requesting information.
