IRS Letter 728 – Current Balance Due
You have a current unpaid balance and an IRS revenue officer is requesting payment.
Type of Notice: Unpaid balance
Likely next step: Address an IRS bill for unpaid taxes
Why you received IRS Letter 728
- You have an unpaid balance due and may also have unfiled returns.
- The IRS sent your case to a revenue officer (RO) to collect any taxes due and obtain any unfiled returns.
- The RO sent Letter 728 to notify you of the current balance due and to request payment. In some cases, the RO may be willing to work directly with your representative, rather than require a meeting with you. If you want representation before the RO, you and your representative will need to sign a Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative and fax or mail it to the RO.
Notice deadline: 10 days
