Tax examiners are revenue agents and tax compliance officers/tax auditors who conduct field examinations of income tax returns filed by individuals, small businesses, and other entities to ensure compliance with Federal tax laws.

A tax examiner is an IRS employee who reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness, resolves errors, and will requests missing tax information. When there are questionable or unresolved issues, the tax examiner determines whether the IRS should audit the return.
