H&R Block

While Eric McKnight is celebrating his first tax season with H&R Block, he’s been a part of a team for most of his life. And, as an Assistant Team Leader, he’s bringing what he’s learned from being on teams to Block as he motivates his team to focus on what they can control and embrace change – to which he’s no stranger.

Eric honed his team skills in college in 2010 as a forward for Iowa State University, coached by Fred Hoiberg who previously played for the Chicago Bulls. He then transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University where he helped the team advance to the Sweet 16 NCAA tournament and won an ESPY for “Best Upset.” He transferred one final time to finish his college basketball career at California State University, Long Beach.

“When I was little, my dad told me I could be better than Michael Jordan,” said Eric. “That inspiration stayed with me even after he passed when I was a teenager. There’s always room for growth, and I was lucky enough to have those opportunities to advance throughout my career.”

After college, his next step was professional basketball, playing for Randers Cimbria in Randers, Denmark. His mom then fell ill, leading Eric to return to Raleigh to care for her while playing for another professional team, the Raleigh Firebirds. Eventually, Eric focused his career on business opportunities, while offering basketball lessons to are children.

“I really focus on giving back to the community, because it motivates me to be better,” said Eric. “And I chose to join H&R Block this year, because helping clients and leading a team also provides that motivation.”

What really drew Eric to H&R Block when he was ready to take the next important step in his career? The company’s value of relationships, communication, and teamwork. “The team I’m leading is like a basketball team – one I can coach while sharing time and experience,” said Eric. As a leader, I am committed to helping each team member develop their skills, guiding them to think strategically during our busiest season – tax season.”

Whether an H&R Block client or team member, or a child learning a new basketball technique, Eric notes that while one never knows what someone else is going through, we can help others out.

“If I can make an impact, I will, because life is too short, which aligns perfectly with H&R Block’s Purpose: To provide help and inspire confidence in our clients and communities everywhere.”
