Do I Have to Pay Taxes on My Child’s Scholarship That Covers Room and Board?

Scholarships – including ones that cover room and board – are considered income subject to taxes. However, it’s income for your child, so your child will be the one entering that income on their own return.

Is a Scholarship for Room and Board Tax Deductible?

Donors who contribute to a scholarship fund may be able to take a deduction. However, if your child is the recipient of a scholarship, it’s considered taxable income. This includes scholarships that cover room and board.

When your child uses our H&R Block Software program to prepare their return, here’s where to enter scholarships used for room and board:

  1. Click on Income.
  2. Scroll down to find Scholarships.
  3. Click Go To.
